What are the health benefits of consuming CBD

CBD refers to the chemical compound naturally found in the Cannabis Sativa plants. The CBD interacts directly with the neuroreceptors in the human endocannabinoid system. It sends the signals between the human cells to help regulate the body's movement, mood, immune system and homeostasis. More and more research has been conducted to understand how CBD may benefit the human body in recent years.

Offset stress, anxiety and depression

CBD has the ability to calm and this is one of the most popular reasons why many people use CBD as part of their daily routine. In a 2017 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry tested the anxiety levels of 57 men in a simulated public speaking test. In this study, some of the individuals received a placebo while others received 150 milligrams, 300 milligrams or 600 milligrams of CBD prior to their speeches. Those individuals who received the 300 milligrams of CBD experienced a significantly reduced anxiety effect during the test compared to those who received the placebo. Additionally, the participants who received the 150 and 600 milligrams of CBD experienced higher levels of anxiety during the test than the 300 milligrams group.

Treat select epilepsy syndromes with CBD

In some cases, people have used CBD to treat epileptic seizures. In 2018, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved CBD for such health conditions under the prescribed Epidyolex which treats seizures resulting from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. This forms of epilepsy usually occur in patients over the age of 2 years old. The FDA's approval was backed by a well-vetted study which involved 516 patients who suffered from Lennox-Gastunt syndrome and Dravet syndrome. It was found that when Epidyolex was used alongside other prescribed medications, the frequency of seizures greatly decreased.

Reduced PTSD symptoms with CBD

According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 11 people who were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) received CBD alongside psychiatric care for up to eight weeks in an outpatient psychiatric clinic. Ten of the eleven patients experienced a decrease in their PTSD symptoms. CBD was generally well tolerated, the researchers found. Margaret Rajnic, a doctor of nursing practice experienced in medical cannabis and CBD, highlighted the importance of using therapy alongside the use of cannabis or CBD for PTSD. She believes that “there is an amount of therapy needed for PTSD,” she said.
