Full-Spectrum CBD vs Broad-Spectrum CBD vs CBD Isolate: What’s the Difference?

Understanding the three main types of CBD

If you have been looking at CBD oil, you may have noticed three terms appearing repeatedly: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate.

They describe different ways of formulating a CBD product, and understanding the distinction can make it much easier to compare products without relying on marketing language.

The important point is that these terms describe the composition of the formulation, not a simple ranking from “best” to “worst”.

At Oxocan, we use full-spectrum CBD in our CBD oil range because it reflects the type of formulation we wanted to create: a CBD oil containing CBD alongside other naturally occurring hemp compounds, rather than a formulation based solely around isolated CBD.

So what exactly is the difference?

What is full-spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD is made using a hemp extract that retains CBD alongside other naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant.

Depending on the extract and manufacturing process, these can include other cannabinoids and naturally occurring plant compounds.

The defining feature is that the CBD is not isolated from the rest of the extract.

This is why the term “full-spectrum” matters when you are comparing CBD oils. Two bottles may both contain CBD, but the composition of the extract can be quite different.

Oxocan’s CBD oils are full-spectrum formulations and are available in three concentrations: 10%, 15% and 20%.

This gives customers a straightforward way to compare concentration while keeping the underlying formulation consistent.

What is broad-spectrum CBD?

road-spectrum CBD also contains CBD alongside other naturally occurring hemp compounds, but it is generally processed to remove or substantially reduce THC.

In other words, broad-spectrum sits between full-spectrum CBD and CBD isolate in terms of the range of compounds retained.

The exact composition can vary between products, so it is important to look beyond the words “broad-spectrum” and check the manufacturer’s product information and laboratory testing.

A responsible CBD brand should be able to tell you what is actually present in the finished product rather than relying solely on a category name.

What is CBD isolate?

CBD isolate is different again.

Instead of retaining a broader hemp extract, CBD isolate is a highly purified form of cannabidiol.

The objective is to isolate CBD from the other naturally occurring compounds in the original hemp extract.

This means a CBD isolate formulation is much more narrowly defined than a full-spectrum formulation.

The Food Standards Agency has published safety assessments concerning CBD isolate as a novel food ingredient, illustrating the level of regulatory and scientific consideration that surrounds CBD products intended for consumption in the UK.

Full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum vs isolate at a glance:

The simplest way to think about the three formulations is:

  • Full-spectrum: CBD plus a broader range of naturally occurring hemp compounds.
  • Broad-spectrum: CBD plus other hemp compounds, with THC removed or substantially reduced.
  • CBD isolate: highly purified CBD without the broader hemp extract profile.

The exact composition of any finished product should always be confirmed through the manufacturer’s product information and, where available, laboratory testing.

Why does the distinction matter?

The difference matters because the label tells you something about what you are actually buying.

If you prefer a formulation that retains a broader profile of naturally occurring hemp compounds, full-spectrum CBD may be the category you want to explore.

If you specifically want a formulation designed around CBD with THC removed or substantially reduced, broad-spectrum products may be more appropriate.

If you want a formulation based around isolated cannabidiol, CBD isolate is the relevant category.

There is no need to assume that one category is universally better than another. The more useful question is: which formulation matches your preferences and the product information you are looking for?

How to compare CBD oils properly?

The spectrum is only one part of the picture.

When comparing CBD oils, look at:

  • The amount of CBD in the bottle.
  • The concentration.
  • The ingredients.
  • The type of extract used.
  • Manufacturing information.
  • Independent laboratory testing.
  • The manufacturer’s transparency about the finished product.

This is one reason we make laboratory information available for our current CBD oils through the Oxocan Lab Reports page.

Testing can give you information about the cannabinoid profile and composition of a particular formulation rather than asking you to rely entirely on a product description.

Where does Oxocan fit?

Oxocan’s current CBD oil range uses full-spectrum CBD formulations in three concentrations: 10%, 15% and 20%.

The 10% oil contains 1,000mg CBD in a 10ml bottle, the 15% contains 1,500mg, and the 20% contains 2,000mg.

That means the range is designed to make concentration easy to compare while keeping the formulation approach consistent.

You can explore the complete range through our Full-Spectrum CBD Oils collection and review the available laboratory information through our Lab Reports page.

The simplest way to remember the difference

Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate are not simply three different strengths of CBD.

They describe three different approaches to the composition of a CBD formulation.

Full-spectrum retains a broader range of naturally occurring hemp compounds. Broad-spectrum retains a broader profile while being formulated to remove or substantially reduce THC. CBD isolate focuses on highly purified cannabidiol.

Once you understand that distinction, comparing CBD oils becomes much simpler.

Rather than choosing based on the strongest-sounding description, look at the formulation, concentration, ingredients, testing and transparency behind the product.

That is a much more useful way to choose.
